And then he comes to my fav topics: What is #AI? What is #intelligence? Why? My point is that you should not address #ethical concerns nor #AIEthics without first #defining these concepts. "#AI: making things as smart as humans (or smarter)." @razzrboypic.twitter.com/LPd4tX9Mau

The landscape is complex, interdisciplinary, with no common language. This makes it difficult to find a connection between technical & non-technical work. @razzrboy: "Hard to draw boundary around what the #AI part of the problem is." #AIethics #ethicalAI @IJCAIconf #IJCAI_2019pic.twitter.com/xqKerxIkOE

Very important: common sense morality. Because #commonsense is not what #AI systems are good at. Thus, making #AI #moral or bringing #morality into #AI 👉 challenging! BTW, take a look at Resnik's eight principles. #AI #AIEthics @razzrboy @IJCAIconf #IJCAI_2019pic.twitter.com/10ZOxFBjyF

The idea that it is bad to discover the wrong truths is very familiar for me, having grown up in Eastern Germany. We were taught that certain truths would empower the enemies of the working class and lead to reactionary politics. Perhaps we can use some of our old expertise now?

Exactly my thoughts having grown up in Cuba! So I asked him what about also considering the "bad" norms, the "bad" behaviours (though defining "bad" might have fuzzy contours). Wouldn't it help us in getting #morality right? I think it would.

It seems to me that ethics is about resolving conflicts of interest under conditions of shared purpose, and has to be firmly grounded in game theory and solid political philosophy, while most work in AI ethics is still ad hoc and opportunistic.

The people with the strongest moral sense are often those with the poorest grasp of ethics. That is perhaps not an accident: moral emotions may be the expression of indoctrinated and social priors that regulate behavior before we derive ethics, which requires moral autonomy.

It may be a mix of nurture & nature ethical behaviour (?) Humans, as social animals, have different degrees of "innate takes" on what is wrong or not, fair or not (prior to indoctrination, I would say?)

"Innate takes" would be innate priors, such as the tendency for religiosity that was bred into us by the cults that dominated our civilization for millennia? Why not start with proper epistemology (confidence in a belief must equal weight of evidence in support of it)? :)
