In what sense does software not have identity?

I beg to differ, the software runs on bits and these are computer instructions in certain sense, in cases such as this - the processed bits of information from the physical space has an effect on the running processes in the brain software.

If there is a cause, then an identity can be attached to it imo.

Software requires a physical substrate to exist in our universe. And any particular physical substrate is *that* and not any other. So I have a physical identity. But the important parts of me as a person might have nothing to do with those specifics.
