Why is America a dick to every other country in the world? And has been since ww2? Because we are powerful enough to get away with it. and have been since about ww2* (Just like why spoiled rich people like the trump’s are liable to be dicks)https://twitter.com/daniellambach/status/1105734353051623424 …

There seems also to be a matter of aesthetics. I don't think that Americans are well aware what their country looks like to the rest of the world, and they sometimes judge the perception of others on how similar it appears to their own.

Right, but why aren’t we aware? Presumably cause we can get away with not being aware? (Same as why people in positions of power lack theory of mind wrt subordinates. Which social psych sees, stupidly, as “explaining” lack of empathy. But both explained by lack of incentive.)

Possible, but is this not short sighted? Historically, most major powers invested heavily into public relations, and into making sure that their vassals were doing well. Perhaps the US was just getting started at this empire thing?

Maybe. But we did do some developing of vassal states. See eg Marshall plan.

Germany was probably the biggest success of the US, but after that most countries that were invaded or couped by the US got a raw deal.

No. I am sure there is a lot of sound political history that discusses this, and I am naive to that. But it seems that foreign policy began to have a much shorter scope, and was more driven by the needs and whims of individual administrations than by a global plan?

Def sounds plausible. Would love to see evidence/case studies analyzed.
