I think deterministic is often used as in 'predictable' and there is a significant difference.

Deterministic means that a function returns the same value every time, for the same inputs. This means it compresses a portion of the universe independently of time, but often, you may not predict it. Indeterministic functions always imply unpredictability.

Exactly. The free will obsession is a western red herring.

The idea that you have some say in what happens (what you do or say) vs everything has already happened from now until the end of time, like a movie we are just now watching, is dumb. Free will is just a probability space, so fewer options becomes more deterministic (predictable)

Reminds me of
@SDMumford and@ranilillanjum's chapter "Free Will" in _What Tends to Be_ '18... If determinism is false, the libertarian has to do some work to show that free will is possible. But if causation≠necessity, then maybe we can set aside determinism altogether...Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

People mix up "deterministic" and "determinated".

The concepts are so theory laden or full of folk meaning. But I'm not keen on the linguistic analysis approach to reconciliation. There's still a gap in understanding somewhere.

Probabilistic will?

I'm not sure how, if characters in a pre-written book are also written to discover they are such, how then having them continue to believe their actions are free would have them seem 'right minded'.

What I don’t get is how free will became an ontological issue? Free will exists on a spectrum, and an organism’s place upon that spectrum is directly correlated with the complexity of the organism. Biology provides the constraints of free will.
