I'd say sentience is the ability to feel them (deviations from "hard coded" models of homeostasis). That doesn't even require a brain (->plants).

Reading all the tweets on this, I realize you got a notion of sentience that is close to what I‘d call consciousness. I think there are much more basic forms of sentience besides that.

It is useful for a brain to know what it would be like to be a person that is coupled to a cohesive environment. So it simulates that.
