I think this framing of civility as a pro/con issue might not do it justice. We could use similar arguments pro/con food. Civility is a tool that tends to increase probability of good discourse outcomes. It may imply treating uncivil people with civility, and punishing exploiters

IMHO the differences are not about whether gruff people can be accommodated (they often can), or whether it is ok to push against people who believe in domination by violence (it's sometimes necessary). The question is whether we want civilization.
