Some people don't realize that the Dalai Lama does not get elected, he gets reborn. As far as she is concerned, it is completely up to her how she will look like in his next incarnation.

Few people realize the current Dalai Lama is not personally convinced that reincarnation is a thing.

If the Dalai Lama is fully identifying with his role, the role provides all purposes, and the cultural environment allows continuity, then reincarnation is possible, no?

I know, right? Reincarnation does obviously not make sense if you identify with your personal memories, traits or genetics, but it works in several other modes of self identification.

I think the Japanese are ahead of the rest of the planet on this. Don't they have full size mechanical versions of historical heroes- some that speak famous platitudes?

No, these are called actors, and they are meant to provide cultural references, not reincarnations.

My limited understanding of Shintoism suggests that all things have embodied spirit. Do you know if this is correct?

I don't understand Shintoism sufficiently to have any opinion. I would not know what it means for a thing to have embodied spirit in such a context.

What does being alive mean for a Shintoist? Most people I know are quite puzzled about what it means to be alive, so I would probably not trust the translations without understanding the translator's set of perspectives either...

Presumably, a Shintoist knows a property that distinguishes living animals from dead animals, so not all things will be alive in that sense. The Shintoists may be referring to a different property if it is shared by all things in their ontology, for example state evolution.
