Well-meaning teachers encourage my kids to use more "vocabulary" words in their writing. I tell them that on this one point they can ignore their teachers, because the best writing uses the simplest possible words.
Perhaps the Graham household already defaults to a large vocabulary, while the teacher uses a general optimization strategy that is not accounting for that? I noticed that many schools don't do well if they have to tailor education into different directions for different kids.

There will always be differences between children, and I wouldn't want it any other way. I'm not sure what that has to do with the difficulty of mastering the nuances of your full vocabulary. The more words you know, the more there is to master.
