Japan can be understood as a high trust society, China as a low trust society, and the US as a variable trust society. This is reflected in signaling expectations, legal system and privacy norms.
It may be interesting to ask what specifically you trust in: do you feel safe in the presence of a random stranger from your own society? (Theft, assault, support if in a car accident...) Majority of strangers may be less important than if 10% of people are very dangerous to you.
