What are some of the biggest, ideally unheralded, successes of communist or socialist central planning? (Not military.)

Quite decent healthcare system that eradicated pox etc., high literacy rates, built working agriculture post Stalin that kept Eastern Europe without famine (despite lack of markets and wrong incentives on all levels), high recycling rates of raw materials (but high pollution).

Yes, the central planning economies were usually less successful than market driven economies with similar cultural history.
