To extent group selection does shape our behavior, it has a rather hard time overriding individual incentives imo. Hence, it might explains selection between equilibria, like which norms we enforce and abide by. But to get people to sacrifice their lives...<—I am skeptical. 2/

Yes, but such instinctual compulsions are derived from primitive patterns of behavior when “group fitness” was defined very differently. Modern social complexities often confound our abilities to correctly judge group fitness and when self sacrifice is necessary.

Stuart, I think that Moshe is not interested in *plausible* reasons, but that he tries to find the best causal model. I was not trying to contradict him, but to suggest a possible alternative hypothesis.

Yeah, never ever discussed traits and with negative feedback loops, when made conscious. Evolutionary, e.g. sadism falls into that category. You are the first to mention it, afaik. It's a kind of inverted king with no clothes.
