Is this an odd Tragedy of the Commons - like scenario? Good for all birds to deplete inedible mice but why should the incremental bird expend energy and risk leaving a safe perch to kill a pest?

We can probably simulate the tradeoffs. I expect there is are several thresholds beyond which a predator population benefits from cultivating the prey population.
