This is not how it works. People are pursuing unsustainable things en masse which are not forbidden, and some of the forbidden things need to be integrated if we want to become sustainable.

I’m not sure your basic assumptions are correct. With progress also comes liberalization, and I’d say today it is way more free than in the 1960s in most countries, and contrary to what we assume, number and length of laws and regulations has been slightly decreasing for decades.

Germany was more liberal in 1928 than in 1938. The US was more liberal in 2000 than it is now. The domains in which people are free to self actualized vs. where they are punished for it shift as well.

So change the understanding from a constant to a variable?
-
Moral sensibilities are and remain a variable, that is their nature. But if we use present moral sensibilities to punish past behavior that was morally congruent when it happened, we mess up the incentive structure in bad ways.

That's basically conservatism vs liberalism. Closing of borders vs opening of borders. Elon Musk's ideas of how laws should be managed in a direct democracy on Mars is along these lines. That a law should be removed with less votes than it was added.https://youtu.be/Ig_-P6q_yAQ

as us olligarch without first world problems this question must be raised: am i allowed to break us dominance in space on my own colony on mars? whats with financial autonomy and own tax system and jurisdiction?

Hence the fact that integrity sometimes means breaking an existing law. Of course we can’t break down all socially constructed laws ... I would hate to see someone taking a crap in my backyard just bc he or she has to poo.
