It would be convenient if the officer's behavior was merely stupidity but we all know that ain't it.

Can you try to see the situation through the eyes of the patrol officer? It may take a lot of time and you may have to retrace all the points where your and his biography flipped bits in your minds differently, until you become him.

This situation is about much more than that

Yes. It displays two humans who are strongly identified with their current role, and both do not understand the actual situation that they are in, creating danger for both. And then there is that invisible person who puts a NatGeo frame around it and posts it online.

I hope I'm misunderstanding you, but this is not reducible to cognitive limitations, just like the character of an individual isn't. This level of failure to meet the key conditions under which authority is given is failing the society it is for. The officers are in the wrong.

The officer is unable to tell the difference between a potential burglar scouting out a student dorm and a poorly mannered student ("dude", "bro") that just refuses to cooperate. Neither has been educated or is capable to understand the motives and signals of the other.

Acceptance. You have to accept that you are in an unfavorable situation & navigate it according to where you *are*, not where you ‘should be’ Unfortunately even if you try to exist symbiotically with the universe, turbulence will still occur from time to time

Our initial reactions to threats are physical-emotional, and only later can we calm down and think rationally. For those of us who normally think rationally, our knee-jerk reaction is to try to rationalize with the threat, even though we rationally know it doesn't work...
