the thing I don't get with all the furor over embryo selection is how bad it could be, exactly, given that the alternative is literally picking one at random

those dynamics are already in place though. why do some parents neglect to, e.g., read to their children? or feed them healthful food? they know that other parents are already doing so and that it improves long term outcomes as much as (if not more than) embryo selection.

I think it is psychologically comforting to be able to leave things to chance (or "God's plan" if they are religiously inclined) and extremely uncomfortable to gain agency over a thing that was not previously subject to agency.
