We could be using machine learning to reinvent society but instead we're mostly using it to: 1) Create dangerous tools of mass manipulation and propaganda 2) Optimize the profits of the wealthy and make wealth distribution worse 3) Make d̶u̶m̶b̶ smart toys for entertainment

All new technology is being applied according to the prevalent incentives. And yet what you describe is true for traditional media. AI/ML has a huge potential for creating new playing fields and improving the world. (And yes, opportunity tends to lead to inequality of outcome.)

It’s a recursive problem. The forces that get most amplified in influencing incentive changes follow their own incentives.
