I really don't understand why the "we live in a simulation" argument is so popular but the "I live in a simulation created and projected by my brain that represents an external shared universe" argument isn't

We could be simulating a simulation. Ad infinitum.

Only if there are infinities, which are they are not. But the thought that we would create a perfect simulation of our universe, containing a version of ourselves that creates a perfect simulation of theirs, is amusing: it would explain how our universe results from a simulation.
