When fully awake, I have aphantasia: I cannot experience my mental imagery, even though I know it is there and I can use it for drawing and design. When I begin to fall asleep, it often becomes visible, but not from the front (the direction of attention)—it slides in "sideways".
It can work for orchestrating moments in which the self gets relieved of control because it drowns in experience. I imagine that the newborn mind is freshly thrown into the trip and fully overwhelmed.

Yes, my impression was that my daughter took ~8-9 months to form a self, and my son a bit more than a year.
