When fully awake, I have aphantasia: I cannot experience my mental imagery, even though I know it is there and I can use it for drawing and design. When I begin to fall asleep, it often becomes visible, but not from the front (the direction of attention)—it slides in "sideways".

Hmm...I wouldn't compare it to hallucination. My "mind's eye" is like a separate visual space I can open up when needed, but it doesn't affect the contents of my actual visual field, aside from a loss of focus (as I focus on the contents of the mind's eye).
