When fully awake, I have aphantasia: I cannot experience my mental imagery, even though I know it is there and I can use it for drawing and design. When I begin to fall asleep, it often becomes visible, but not from the front (the direction of attention)—it slides in "sideways".
I trained myself when I was young but I stopped. Sometimes I have spontaneous lucid dreams but it is rare. I have greater control of the hypnagogic state while waking up, but need to be in a totally quiet place.
