When fully awake, I have aphantasia: I cannot experience my mental imagery, even though I know it is there and I can use it for drawing and design. When I begin to fall asleep, it often becomes visible, but not from the front (the direction of attention)—it slides in "sideways".

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean with 'experience'... dreams and reality seem to stretch beyond the focus of my attention. Reading or remembering memories there's nothing beyond what I currently focus on. And even that is more abstract, not lifelike. That is not 'normal'?
