Did your aphantasia make you initially suspicious of constructive theories of perception? Such theories seem very natural to me as I can literally construct things in my field of vision to some degree.

No, I always realized that dreams are constructed and inferred that perception is too. I just did not realize that others can hallucinate at will, and would have thought that to be maladaptive.

Exactly the same. I've found that working in visual media has developed my mental imaging somewhat. Although it's still a case of pretending to imagine, if that makes sense. I think there's some kind of functional blocking at work, probably learned in early childhood.

Interesting. Is the imagery experienced in the same way when you are falling asleep as when dreaming? For me, I can experience images at will while awake, but not in a fully immersive de-subjectified way as in a dream.
