Not to nitpick, but selecting for with fire and sword is evolution. You can't be the fittest if you don't survive.

It was breeding, i.e. evolution against a fitness function that was imposed based on an intentional model. I agree that it is still evolution, but one where the explanation of the fitness function requires understanding the intentional model and its implications.

I believe we all start observing things around us once our basic needs are fulfilled. Religion always comes. It must be part of the process. I don’t know of a single ancient people who didn’t have a religion.
