I genuinely believe Scratch serves as a good introduction to programming but if you allow people to use it for more than a year or so then you'll just kind of break their minds I guess.

Have any fav recommendations for learning to program (python)?

Python is a great teaching language. C may be underrated, because all the boilerplate gets into the way, but you have to learn it anyway at some point, and it is easy, rewarding and teaches useful ideas about how computers work.
