Which is more self-indulgent & worthy of criticism: mountain-climbing, or taking recreational drugs? Assume the two activities have similar expense, work-inhibition, & risk of early death.

Does Paul Erdös’ use of amphetamine count? Kary Mullis’ use of LSD? Freud’s use of cocaine? War on drugs has had more work inhibiting, drug potency increasing effects than a libertarian attitude.

True. I agree with you we should see recreational as an adjective separable from drug but many see “recreational drug” as a noun and class of compounds with only one application, that of abuse.

At the moment, the fight is mostly to permit therapeutic use (which is very important), but yes, the thought that some use may be neither therapeutic nor hedonistic nor self destructive is not much in the public discourse.
