Should the downvote option be removed from the voting systems of most major social media services?
The question is whether the social media system and you converge to the same sense of relevance.

Exactly. It doesn't. What I need to know, to do my work well, is different from what others need to know. I can't decide for you what information is important to you. But universally applied voting results means that I definitely can inhibit information you need.

If preferences of senders and recipient are not aligned, you need selection. It becomes censorship if selection does not reflect preferences of the recipient, but of a third party. You need secondary regulation, a control signal that lets third parties approximate your interests.
