Every society needs fools: individuals that find the Overton window hilarious, don't have any stakes in the social game, and are protected from repercussions for anything they blurt out. Perhaps we should have one in every newsroom, corporate board and academic institution.

Were these once called comedians? ( or archaic: jesters?)

No, comedians usually work by reflecting the boundaries of the Overton window of the outgroup only, and will be protected because their audience is their ingroup. Fools tend to be total loners, and they need the protection and sufferance of a court to make their jests.

Interesting: Parsing... what is the meaning of “reflecting the boundaries”.

The best comedians will point at things that are true but that members of powerful groups are not allowed to say (and may not think about) without losing status, and they can usually only say it in front of an audience that can afford to agree without losing status themselves.
