Is there a name for the situation where one unwittingly makes a sincere public argument that is false but nobody will contradict them because the counter argument is outside of the Overton window?

This is typically not unwittingly. Ie. SJ Gould fully knew that he was basically lying in the Mismeasure of Man, but he sincerely thought that it was required to achieve a greater good.
