The self does not have agency. The self is a model of the mind’s agency: it does not make but documents decisions, for learning and communication. That’s why the self is tied to the experience of volition. (The self is also a model of what the mind experiences and how it reacts.)

Why would the recognition of the representational nature of mental content lead to a general convergence of the moral sentiments of a political leader in a feudal war and a guy trying to get laid in an ashram with yours? A Buddhist master is just one of many aspects of a person.
