i think the truth is pretty simple most of the time. e.g., it's good to create good things, bad to create bad things, good to destroy bad things, and bad to destroy good things. it's good to say, think, and believe true things, and bad to say, think, and believe false things
It a statue of Jesus guiding the hands of a programmer a good thing or a bad thing? Is it a true or false thing if the programmer believes in Jesus’ guidance?

if it's genuinely the case that he needs self deception to perform better, then maybe that's one of the cases where the truth isn't pretty simple

If he believes Jesus is guiding him is true. But maybe is not the same Jesus for everybody else. It will always be a good thing subjectively otherwise the programmer won't follow that (self) command sooo... Is this a discussion about moral relativism?

You remind me of Jerry in the Rick and Morty episode “Get Shwifty” arguing that his daughter Summer should be free to believe that the extraterrestrial Cromulons are God and join an idiotic cult worshipping them (which later tries to murder the family for possibly heresy)
