There seems to be a consensus now that the exposure to ideas, arguments and memes on youtube, facebook, google search and twitter must be carefully manipulated to make sure people don't elect the wrong politician or have the wrong idea about gay marriage. But why stop there?

My concern is about finding pure structures (like free speech) that can somehow withstand exploitation. I suspect they can, but only with defenders actively expending energy to preserve integrity. We have not found a stable equilibrium of truth.

And to your point, social media is exponential amplification of human *attention* - not value. Our pickle is that attention is amoral and therefore amplifying that signal leads to huge variance in obtained value for the society.
