It seems that between 1920 and 1970, there was much more progress in physics, computer science, biology, psychiatry, psychology, aerospace and space engineering, education than there was in the last fifty years. Something broke.

Thinking takes ridiculously long and there’s little to show midway. And then there’s learning—also slow and even less encouraged. Basically impossible pre-tenure.

So is one cause, a reduced willingness to just fund people to go to university and do whatever, compared to 50 years ago?
