Three purposes of memory: carrying information into the future to inform policy, evaluating present learning in the future, and not doing the same thing twice.

Recently thinking about how self-representation serves these functions (and not much else). Would you mind sharing your thoughts on memory versus self-representation (self awareness vs. e.g., sensory awareness, mindfulness, etc.)?

I think of the self as the set of identifications (what we think should be), and the internal regulation mechanisms and parameters we consider to be under our control. The more of that we model, the deeper our self; the higher up in the control hierarchy, the higher the awareness

Much appreciated! Thoughts on the strong environmental awareness experienced when abstract models (self, plans, memories) loosen--focus, flow, meditation? Often described as hyperawareness (perhaps because all too rare). Where is this in your framework? Apologies if obvious.

Experiential awareness is a different concept for me. I think that it requires deep models as well, but the focus of attention is on the perceptual representation. There is an experience of immersion, and an absence of analytic manipulation.
