honestly, it seems like a lot of the rationalist-sphere has a buzzword-happy science-fiction writer's level of understanding wrt AI - remember when EY wanted to get a bunch of people together to build a seed AI using a grab bag of outdated techniques and the JVM?

The problem is that we really cannot prove that meta learning cannot be accidentally tackled by stochastic gradient descent or some such. The question of when we have to deal with AGI is uncertain and unrelated to sentiments of people who get paid for having opinions in public.
