The programmer did not know in advance that AlphaGo/AlphaZero would discover that some assumptions of human Go play were wrong. The program did not just embody a new strategy of winning at Go, but discovered new knowledge about Go.

OK, is the reason behind that ability to find those assumptions still the creativity of the programmer and not really the program? Or is the program writing new code via new ideas about Go, on top of what the programmer created, if so what ideas?

Creativity is the bridging of discontinuities in a search space, often by constructing a new space. Machines will outperform humans at that soon.
