AI used to be an epistemic underdog subculture, pursued by weird nerds with great effort to reach an unlikely goal. Now that it has become sexy and high status, the academic AI subculture gets invaded by griftershttps://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths …

On W coast this sounds strongly perjorative of geeks ( in case that's not your intent). May be problematic in communicating across "generations" and vicissitudes of vocabulary over decades. Eg Was Axl Rose more normie or geek? Thx for clarifying!

It‘s meant descriptively, not prescriptively. Nothing wrong to wear a star wars costume because you like star wars vs because you like to be a star wars fan. Not sure that either category says much about Axl Rose.

Cool. Think I'm starting to get it. Geeks are actually normies in that social signalling is relatively important to them?

Still prefer this: Psychopaths don't signal at all or use signals manipulatively. Nerds signal high IQ & some pro-social values for survival (often bc they lack social abilities like psychopaths). Geeks have these abilities and signal high IQ opportunistically, sometimes fake it.

I can only speak to the social skills of psychopaths. They can be extraordinary.
