The ability to perceive depends on having formed a coherent model of a universe that predictably gives rise to the present sensory data.
I suspect that the cell is the smallest unit that enables evolution. Molecules and stars are not formed by evolutionary principles.

If you enumerate universe states, some of them will appear as if they contain the memory of previous states. If you organize those into a world line, you see that in every state, information disperses over locations. Globally entropy is constant, locally it is increasing.

Entropy is evolution if we consider the two forces of reality being pulling (contraction) and pushing (expansion). Evolution is selection (things being pulled together) and procreation with mutation (things being pushed apart). It's all fractal.
