I suspect that the cell is the smallest unit that enables evolution. Molecules and stars are not formed by evolutionary principles.

In my teens, I had a fantasy of being abducted by aliens and taken to live in their utterly, er, alien society. What a total head trip it would be to make sense of their everyday life! Now I'm not so sure. I'd probably be unable to form a coherent model. I'd die of alienation.

We need to see part similarity and part difference for us to comprehend things. Too much predictability makes us stop noticing things ("I know that already"), while too much unpredictability makes us anxious. So perception is a happy balance. (Though possibly weighted.)
