I sometimes wish I could do that in reality. I certainly do it in my life, but often have to wait until the dinner is over, and I‘m so impatient. Life is too short to argue against bad faith.

Oh, I tell them that I don’t see a point to continue along the present path and what alternative ways of interaction I prefer, as least if I can delude myself that the social repercussions will not be severe. I can also be too anxious and unaware to do the right thing.

Self censorship can be a valuable default; relax it wisely. When we are so old that we no longer care about what others think about us, we can more clearly see that they will come after us regardless of the purity of our intentions.

Most people are not free in what opinion they are allowed to pick, because losing alignment with their environment has grave consequences. So letting themselves be persuaded may not be an option for them
