The mind is the set of functional mechanisms that produces the representations that the self experiences. I think of it as an AI that runs on the brain and generates a VR that predicts sensory data (the world) and ideas about it.

Would you comment on Susan Blackmore’s opinion that inner self is just illusion created by competing memes in their effort to replicate themselves? Any relations to your model?

So you consider the mind and the self to be separate objects? I think that if there is no self then it cannot even be an illusion. There is only the illusion created by the mind that ones self is in it impossibly.

There is a self, but it is a simulacrum created by the mind.

Self is the mind's representation (concept) of itself.

Yes. I think of the mind as the thing that authors the entire subjective universe, but if we become aware of that then the self encompasses this. Conversely, we can have an active mind while suspending the self, which just means that the mind does not model itself.

Seems there's also a kind of "taking self as object" move. @Meaningness frames this as "selfing". It's not that there is no self in such a moment, but that there isn't a fixation on it. https://meaningness.com/self pic.twitter.com/6WCt7WXgoe

Buddhists claiming self does not exist is a misunderstanding. The Buddhist conception is a permanent unchanging self does not exist. In other words, self is a process.

We have a default tendency to assume that large inhomogenuous and inscrutable but positively valenced systems of deep explanations exhort what we intuited all along :)

This is what I understand from reading the early work (Pali canon). But we do see many teachers claiming "self does not exist".

Folks that seem to have turned Buddhism into something that pans put always seem to be regarded as heretics

I think that Buddhists and Taoists should be happy with the claim that everything works according the program running on the only existing, ie physical structure of the universe. To me it would be widely opened statement enabling further thinking in every direction.
