I find it difficult to model the social world in power hierarchies, because I don't have an intrinsic sense for social authority, and the criteria that most people use when characterizing actual social power are quite unconvincing.

Yep! I moved around a lot and lived between two different economic conditions due to divorce. Most places where I struggled were implicit power structures that weren't allowed to be explicit. Was oft even taboo to question: seen as 'questioning authority'/'being disrespectful'.

Strikes me as a parallel between friends groups who negotiate with each other, vs the bully/nerd dynamic were power was enforced. I suspect a lot of my failings at adapting to the later were due to not having a strong model of envy/jealousy that may have driven antagonizers.
