I find it difficult to model the social world in power hierarchies, because I don't have an intrinsic sense for social authority, and the criteria that most people use when characterizing actual social power are quite unconvincing.

There a big gap between implicit and explicit teaching. Not having intrinsic sense of social authority isn't as much of a handicap if the power structures are made clear. In my lower/middle class experience, you are expected to 'just know' these things without being taught.

In the lower classes you are encouraged to not know.
