The mind is the set of functional mechanisms that produces the representations that the self experiences. I think of it as an AI that runs on the brain and generates a VR that predicts sensory data (the world) and ideas about it.

Would you comment on Susan Blackmore’s opinion that inner self is just illusion created by competing memes in their effort to replicate themselves? Any relations to your model?

So you consider the mind and the self to be separate objects? I think that if there is no self then it cannot even be an illusion. There is only the illusion created by the mind that ones self is in it impossibly.

There is a self, but it is a simulacrum created by the mind.

Self is the mind's representation (concept) of itself.

Yes. I think of the mind as the thing that authors the entire subjective universe, but if we become aware of that then the self encompasses this. Conversely, we can have an active mind while suspending the self, which just means that the mind does not model itself.

Seems there's also a kind of "taking self as object" move.
@Meaningness frames this as "selfing". It's not that there is no self in such a moment, but that there isn't a fixation on it. https://meaningness.com/self pic.twitter.com/6WCt7WXgoe

As I understand it the self is an ever changing appearance produced by the mind. So the question is not what is the self, it’s what is the mind.

I find it useful to think of the mind as an AI running on the brain. The mind is capable of producing a dynamic simulation that predicts sensory data, and a self that modeling the regulation targets and the state of the regulation.

Is it the specific sort of AI program ? Unique? Running only on human brains?
