A vibration is a continuous rotation where at least one of the dimensions is of a fundamentally different nature than the others (such as tension vs. spatial change).

If you rotate an object across spatial dimensions, it retains its shape. If you perform a spacetime rotation, it elongates or compresses. Likewise if you translate between tension and distance.
