Is there a teachable way to determine the extent of our own ignorance and biases? I think it might be worth wile to design a curriculum around this.
That's like saying that someone who has jumped out of an airplane needs to invent a parachute before he hits the ground.

If the person doesn't have a parachute he may well need to invent something before he hits the ground. So I accept your analogy. As for the outcome of our adventures in machine learning that's another topic altogether.

My point was that sometimes you would have to invent safeguards long before you decide to jump out of the plane, because you will not be able to implement them after you jump.

It may help to pay attention whenever a belief triggers an emotional or motivational response of any kind. More generally, look at things as unvalenced patterns seen from the perspective of a fully detached observer inhabiting a different universe.
