No, like literally everything we do, we do it because it’s a great story. Renewal, hope, new beginnings are there to put us into a sense of rebirth , of resetting the clock, away from our impending doom. New Year’s is the opposite of birthdays.

Birthday gives us the certainty that we are here to begin another one of these years, only more senescent than before, while New Year offers the unique opportunity for denial of continuously failing the past one, because we reset some of the lowest bits of our calendar.

It’s a thing AND a representation of the thing. For example, an Aston Martin is a thing, but to its owner it’s both an object and a narrative representation of it. I see narrative as a compression mechanism in the brain creating simple behavior script from lots of complexity

Fwiw, for me a thing is a state space plus a transition function to order it, and usually with an interface to other things. A story is a particular, usually valenced trajectory through a space of evolutions of causally interconnected things, with definite constraints on states.
