Yeah. But why did our parents/neighbors do it? And why in the intervening years hasn’t that stopped? Not everything that was a custom 1,000 years ago still is.

No, like literally everything we do, we do it because it’s a great story. Renewal, hope, new beginnings are there to put us into a sense of rebirth , of resetting the clock, away from our impending doom. New Year’s is the opposite of birthdays.

Hmm, And getting drunk and watching a ball drop allows us to tell such a story? We and others are *that* easily fooled? But not without the celebration?!?
