I have heard that some scientists used stimulants other than caffeine, or even psychedelics (not always with good long term results), but heroin is news to me. Why would opiates help? Reference?

I'm very interested in any solution that would allow funding novel ideas without having to understand them. In other words, how can a researcher be trusted with new intuition nobody else has?

Fund people, not ideas. This comes down to what motivates, what drives them. Is it money, is it an idea, is it an urge to help or curiosity? Communication is key to get know each other and build trust. Idk how hard safety-mechanisms for payment should be, but trust is better..

Einstein looked for private funding (Krupp) when academia refused his mission to prove his calculated deviating bending angle of light:Russia 1914 eclipse (eventually it was aborted due to war, and the weather was bad). He even wanted to pay 2000 DM himself. That's the spirit,)
