Why would we give a computer such a high degree of autonomy, for example, autonomy to self-improve without human intervention or evaluation. This makes no sense from an engineering perspective.

I used it as an example of resource management being glossed over in stories, but also correct that they are just projections based on whats familiar to us (though with Ex Machina, I think it's fantastic because Ava didn't really pass the test).

I think she did. She was able to model the humans around her sufficiently well to control them. Humans are probably not a difficult control problem if you are not bound by human mental constraints.

Personally, I find Samantha from Her (2013) to be a much more likely manifestation of AGI in the near future. (The movie itself takes place in 2025.)

Way too optimistic imho, but I liked that the movie explored philosophical and cultural problems without the violent conflict that tends to obfuscate the interesting questions with adrenaline.
