Just reminded myself that the distance between NYC and Chicago is almost exactly that between Beijing and Shanghai, and that the 1st is served by 1 train/day that takes 19 hours, and the 2nd is served by 35 trains/day that take as few as 4.5 hours.

Those nine states that claim to want to do something about GHG emissions? They should get NY to join in, then buy Amtrak NEC, Keystone, and Chicago eastbound intercity routes. Find someone competent from SBB or SNCF or JR to run them, and invest heavily in RoW improvements.

We're talking about governments that think that "fresh outside ideas" = hacks who've never run a railroad (Feinberg, Musk, etc.).

Repelling the regulations that hamper Amtrak is probably much harder than inventing a Hyperloop, and that is not Musk's fault.

Let me know when Musk actually invents something.

Something related to tunneling. McAfee invented the commercial antivirus; doesn't mean his takes on other things are worth anything.

Takes being worth something is a different argument. You’d asked to be informed when Musk invented something. I informed.

In the context of Hyperloop. If a McAfee says he invents something that's not an antivirus, you'll be skeptical too, I hope.

Elon Musk has been instrumental in advancing electric car adoption by a decade, making orbital launches much cheaper, and producing better buffer batteries for renewables. He has pulled many times his weight, imho. (And John McAfee is one of the most radical humorists alive.)

He's been instrumental in marketing electric cars as Ferraris for people who think buying Ferraris is tacky.

Unlike Nissan et al, Musk understood that due to the high price of batteries, he must address price insensitive buyers first, i.e. build premium SUVs and cars to fund R&D. Tesla is not competing with Ferrari, but with Landrover and Porsche.
